Hope that you have had a busy proactive week and are gearing up for the warmer weather when it finally arrives!
Did any of you see a couple of programmes on BBC 1 over the last couple of weeks regarding sugar and obesity? Interesting stuff and worth a look if you have time with catch up.
An interesting study with a set of twins, one who was a healthy weight and the other being overweight. On examination of their dietary habits one ate significantly more fibre which resulted in a far more diverse microbiome of the gut.
The gut microbiome or flora as it is sometimes known contains both good and bad bacteria and fungal spores. It helps protect the walls of our intestine, helps to create B Vitamins and is important for a healthy immune system. Many health issues such as thyroid imbalances, obesity, chronic fatigue, joint and skin complaints, along with several mental health issues are thought to be connected with gut function.
Its a delicately balanced system and easily upset by overuse of prescription anti- biotics, sugar, medication, stress, smoking, poor sleeping habits, alcohol etc so it makes sense to include as many beneficial foods such as prebiotics and probiotics as possible in your daily diet.
These include artichoke, onions and garlic, live yoghurt, cottage cheese, keffir and fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut.
Then eating a good variety of plant based, fibre rich foods such as fruit and vegetables will help to “feed” the probiotics and help the good bacteria flourish resulting in that healthy gut microbiome.
Well done to the ladies after week 1 on the current Slim N trim courses, an average of 4 lbs lost, fantastic, great effort and well done.
